stormy Pattern, not going to be a white christmas

It is going to be a rainy period of time with varying temperatures through christmas. We are currently experiancing the approach of a warm front which will continue to give the area light rain, drizzle and areas of fog through tuesday morning. Periods of Heavy rain is expected to develope late afternoon wednesday and continue into the predawn hours of christmas day, Santa needs to have his rain coat. There will also be wind. Wind will be on the increase from tomorrow afternoon on through chrismas eve night. The wind will shift directions christmas and still be relativly strong. Reason why I have   issued the High wind precaution for the merrimack valley. rainfall of up to localized 2 inch amounts is possible. This along with snow melt from the mountains could lead to river flooding in the northern sections of the valley. Temperatures will be increasing through the period as well, Highs could be in the mid to upper 50s predawn christmas before dropping into the  low 40s.  later in the day. Friday through sunday looks to be dry with partly to mostly sunny skies, as an area of high pressure takes control. This area of high pressure looks to be set up to the south of the region which will allow temperatures to be in the 40s. A cold front looks to move through saturday night which will start the cooling process back to what us new englander skiers and snow junkies  like to see. Colder temperatures and possibly a more wintery set up possibly in  store.

A couple of scenerio’s long range

Colder with storms in the form of waves moving south of the area giving us a chance of snow showers as they pass by to the south

colder with more storms and possible nor easters effecting us

The dreaded southeast ridge forms  which is an area of strong high pressure that sets up around florida/southeast coastal states and blocks the colder air from canada from getting a foothold. This lets storms form along the northern edges but usually involves much weaker systems, and usually warmer.

For now we can only hope that old man winter gets the heck out of bed.
